Its black stained weatherboard construction follows the lead of old river cottages but the interior is rather more modern with an eclectic mix of vintage mid-century items, contemporary furniture and a couple of time-worn, early twentieth century furniture pieces. The house sleeps 6 in three bedrooms. There are no cars on the island so the house is extremely quiet with the exception of early morning birdlife and the odd noise from power boats. The two main bedrooms have double beds while the third has two single beds.
The house features two separate decks, one on each level with views through the trees to the river. A large open plan lounge and dining room with a wood burning stove is partially divided from the kitchen by a long stone topped island bench.
The lower level is accessed by an internal set of stairs and contains a double bedroom with a 20sqm deck plus a bathroom and laundry. Exterior stairs lead to the local river beach which is sandy and suitable for swimming at high tide.
He asked her why she didn't play something with a tune in it, and this caused her to turn round in her chair to give him a withering answer. As there is no natural gas on the island the cooktop is electric. She read the short letter quickly; then she sat down, and read it again, and continued to look at it.
With a material palette of black stained timber, lime washed oak floors and pale grey limestone partnered with lots of glass, the house is clean and contemporary but not cold or sterile. Because there are no cars on the island, walking around is very pleasant. There is a bowling green on the island for lawn bowls and a small corner shop that serves coffee, cakes and breakfasts.
The ferry is a slow way to get to and from the island but this is the beauty of the place — everything is done at a slow pace.
The river is a large body of water and is a great place to investigate by kayak. Bath and beach towels are provided. The kitchen is fully equipped with the exception of a kitchen mixer. The oven is Neff, the dishwasher Miele. As there is no natural gas on the island the cooktop is electric. Plenty of quality pots and pans, knives and slow roast pots are provided.
A selection of basic food stuffs are on hand for use by guests.
The house has WiFi. There is currently no television reception. There is a small gas fired BBQ on the main deck. While we stipulate no children under six we are happy to discuss this with prospective guests. Our main concern is that there is no fencing on the island so the potential of a child wandering off is concerning.
In addition there is a large amount of breakable items like ceramics at low levels and a lot of pale linen on furniture - so not totally conducive to very young children.
